樹形が龍の臥した姿に似ていることから名付けられた国指定天然記念物「臥龍桜」。樹齢1100年余り、枝張り30m、高さ20mに及ぶ日本を代表する江戸彼岸桜(えどひがんざくら)の大樹。
この老大木の桜はちょうど龍が臥しているようだというので、大幢寺第20世道仙和尚(どうせんおしょう)が臥龍桜と命名したと言われる。
枝が垂れて地につき発根して母樹より養液不要となり、そこまでの部分が枯損した。昭和34年伊勢湾台風の折、龍の首の部分が折れた。しかし頭部が一本となり原形を留めている。樹下の枯木はそれである。 (国の天然記念物指定 昭和48年5月26日)

Being a state-designated natural monument, Garyu Cherry Tree (which literally means‘The Lying-Dragon Cherry Tree’) was so named because it resembles a dragon lying on the ground.
